Build Season Starts in the Spreadsheet, Not the Shop

Every department has lived some version of this: the chassis arrives in March, the console arrives in June, and the light bar is still on backorder in August. The vehicle sits — insured, registered, and useless — while the shop waits on a box.

Why Guardian Builds Once

Guardian plans every vehicle in advance and starts a build only when all parts and vehicles are ready. It sounds like a scheduling detail. In practice it is the single biggest reason our build timelines are the shortest in the industry. A vehicle that enters the bay complete leaves the bay complete.

The alternative — starting a build and finishing it in stages — costs more than time. Every partial build means a second teardown, a second round of wiring checks, and a second chance to introduce a fault that nobody catches until a night shift.

What Planning Looks Like in Practice

We map the full build sheet before a single part is ordered: lighting, siren and control, radio, mobile computing, partitions, storage, graphics, and power. Long-lead items are ordered against the chassis delivery date, not against the day the order is signed.

The Long-Lead Items That Set the Date

Not every line on a build sheet carries the same risk. A handful of items have historically driven the schedule more than everything else combined, and those are the ones we order against the chassis delivery window rather than the day the purchase order is signed.

  • Emergency lighting and siren control heads

  • Radios and antenna hardware, especially mid-migration

  • Rugged laptops, docks and mounting hardware

  • Partitions, seats and prisoner transport inserts

  • Storage systems and weapon mounts

  • Graphics, which cannot be scheduled until the wrap proof is approved

Graphics are the one departments forget. A vehicle can be mechanically finished and still sit for two weeks because a decal proof is waiting on a signature. We put approval dates on the same calendar as the parts, because an unsigned proof delays a vehicle exactly as effectively as a backordered light bar.

What a Planning Conversation Actually Covers

The first conversation is rarely about equipment. It is about how many vehicles have to go into service, when, and what has to be true for that to happen — budget cycles, council approvals, chassis allocation windows, and what the department has already promised its officers.

From there we work backwards. If four patrol units need to be on the road by March, the chassis have to land by a certain week, the long-lead items have to be ordered by a certain month, and the build sheet has to be locked before that. Every date on that chain is visible to the department, not held privately by the shop.

Plan the Model Year, Not the Vehicle

Departments that plan one vehicle at a time end up re-negotiating the same decisions over and over, and they pay for it in schedule. Planning a full model year lets us order in a single pass, standardise the configuration across the fleet, and keep every unit laid out the same way.

That consistency matters more than it sounds. When every patrol unit has the same control head in the same place, an officer who swaps cars mid-shift is not relearning a console at two in the morning. It also shortens training and makes service calls faster, because our technicians and yours are looking at the same build every time.

The Real Cost of Building Twice

A staged build is not half a build finished early. It is one build done twice. Panels come off a second time, harnesses get disturbed, and every connection verified in the first pass has to be verified again. Each of those touches is another opportunity to introduce a fault that will not surface until the vehicle is on a call.

That is the entire argument for waiting until the parts are in the building. The wait is visible and easy to complain about. The rework is invisible and far more expensive.
