How Former Officers Build Better Squads

By Willie Koch, Account Executive at Guardian Fleet Safety and Former Officer

When I look back at my time in law enforcement, I’m reminded of how much has changed in the tools and technology officers rely on daily. I started my career in a squad car with switches drilled into the dashboard, a plywood center console, and no onboard computer—just a notepad and a radio. By the time I retired, we were using smart siren controllers, body cameras, advanced CAD software, and high-powered LED lighting systems. It’s been an incredible evolution, and now I get to be a part of helping other officers get the equipment they need to do the job right.

“You want someone who understands the demands of the job and what it means to depend on your vehicle every shift.”

One of the most unique things about Guardian Fleet Safety is that all of our Account Executives—myself included—are retired police officers. Collectively, we bring over 120 years of law enforcement experience to the table. That’s not just a number—it’s a real-world advantage for departments looking for a trusted upfitting partner.

When You’ve Been There, You Build Differently

When you're choosing an upfitter, you want more than just someone who knows how to bolt parts together. You want someone who understands the demands of the job and what it means to depend on your vehicle every shift. Former officers bring that perspective. We’ve lived it. We know what gear makes a difference, and just as importantly, what doesn’t.

What That Means for Your Department

  • Real-World Insight: We’ve worked patrol. We know where controls need to be placed, how equipment should function in high-stress situations, and what truly enhances officer safety and efficiency.

  • Fewer Sales Pitches, More Solutions: Our goal isn’t to upsell. It’s to build the best vehicle for the job—one that serves your officers and respects your budget.

  • Trust and Understanding: I’ve built relationships with departments I once worked alongside. That mutual respect and trust carry into every build we do.

The Right Experience Leads to the Right Build

What makes our sales team different is that we’re not just representatives—we’re your peers. We understand the stakes, the standards, and the expectations. It’s why agencies feel comfortable working with us, and why many are surprised—and relieved—when they find out they’re dealing with someone who’s worn the badge.

In this industry, trust is everything. And for me, it’s a privilege to continue serving the law enforcement community by helping build safer, smarter, more reliable squad vehicles. Because when you’ve been in the driver’s seat, you know just how much that matters.
